(English/Spanish)

Cristina Behrens-Soulavy, RMHC-I is a Licensed Psychologist in her country of origin, Venezuela, and is currently a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern in Florida. Having lived in Paris (France), Munich (Germany), Buenos Aires (Argentina), as well as now residing in Miami for 10 years, she brings an international and unique multicultural sensitivity to understanding the clinical and developmental needs of people across the world, as well as their migratory experiences. The life experience that Cristina brings into her sessions, incorporates much of what she has learned in terms of adapting to a different culture, as well as the resiliency that it takes to make a new life in a brand new country. All of this has given her an even greater understanding of the psychological processes necessary to deal with all kinds of challenges, both internal and external. Having dealt with this herself; Cristina is able to impart this knowledge to her clients.

With a strong psychoanalytic theoretical background, Cristina practices eclectically using a variety of evidence-based techniques tailored to her client’s individualized therapeutic goals. Her education and professional background, in both the mind and the body, gives her a unique and effective approach to counseling as it enables her to provide her clients with personalized treatment plans that could be easily integrated into their daily lives.

For over 10 years, Cristina has guided her clients as they identify dysfunctional patterns, assisted them in developing better coping skills, and helped them identify their emotional experiences and needs; in hopes of moving towards their goals, recover their sense of meaning and self-efficacy, and subsequently increase their own satisfaction with life. Throughout her practice she has worked with children, adults, couples, and the elderly. She specializes in relationship challenges of all kinds, couples therapy, gender issues, life transitions, emerging families, pregnancy and post-partum, immigrant’s adaptation issues, cases of anxiety and depression, as well as survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. While listening and conceptualizing cases from a psychoanalytic lens, Cristina also interweaves many other dynamic practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), emotionally focused therapy (EFT), client-centered approach, narrative therapy, brief solution focused therapy, and trauma informed therapy.

Cristina has a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Saint Thomas University, Miami. There, she received the Spirit of Saint Thomas award in 2018 in recognition of her positive leadership and excellent  academic performance. Her formal psychological training is from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, Caracas, Venezuela, where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She continues to educate herself by attending national and local conferences, keeping up with current therapy research and seeking solutions in conjunction with her colleagues to promote mental health.

Cristina is fluent in both, English and Spanish, and she is equipped with a good conversational level in the French language. Cristina is a dynamic, genuine, creative and compassionate clinician, who strives to create a safe and non-judgmental environment so her clients may find the best version of themselves. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her three children and husband. She is an avid yoga practitioner who fully enjoys outdoor activities like fishing, surfing, golfing and hiking. She also possesses a culinary talent that allows her to prepare delicious meals for her family and friends.
